Save the Children is a leading humanitarian organization that works to save the lives of children in the US and around the world. Today, they have helped over 1 billion children have a healthy and safe start in life.

Who They Are

Save the Children was established in 1919 by Eglantyne Jebb and her sister, Dorothy Buxton, as a response to the urgent needs of children affected by the devastation of World War I. Outraged by what she saw in newspapers of the time – children starving because of Allied blockades – she vowed to take a stand. Her protest work eventually led her to found Save the Children in 1919 and present her Declaration of the Rights of the Child to world leaders in 1924.

Today Save the Children works in over 100 countries, ensuring the welfare of children in some of the hardest-to-reach places globally. Their initiatives encompass everything from disaster aid to the promotion of children’s rights, while focusing on health and nutrition, education, protection from exploitation and trafficking, emergency response, and advocacy.

Over its extensive history, Save the Children has garnered considerable recognition, and formed collaborations with numerous governments and global organizations. Through their advocacy arm, the Children Action Network (SCAN), they work with leaders at all levels to expand early childhood education in the US and protect children living in conflict. As a result, US policymakers look to Save the Children as the leading expert on issues affecting childhood at home and abroad.
